Friday Morning Musicale — Celebrating 100 Years, 1927 to 2027Friday Morning Musicale — Celebrating 100 Years, 1927 to 2027

Our history

An intimate beginning.
An enduring resonance.

From a women’s music club founded in 1902 to the opening of Tampa’s original performing-arts home in 1927, the Musicale’s history belongs to generations of artists, students, and audiences.

The essential distinction

Two beginnings.
One enduring institution.

The Friday Morning Musicale Club began in 1902. The centennial of 1927–2027 commemorates our historic clubhouse and auditorium at 809 W. Horatio Street.

The surviving record is rich but not always perfectly consistent. This page follows the strongest evidence found so far, identifies questions that remain open, and links visitors to original materials whenever they are available online.

Living research archiveDates, names, and identifications will continue to be refined as more programs, photographs, clippings, and personal memories are contributed.

Research current through October 3, 2026

A growing record,
carefully verified.

The working historical index now brings together contemporary newspapers, photographs, programs, scholarly studies, official records, film, audio, and community testimony. Announced events are distinguished from completed performances, conflicting dates remain visible, and copyrighted material is linked rather than reproduced without permission.

A documented chronology

History,
measure by measure.

The entries combine newspaper archives, scholarly research, architectural history, organizational records, and later reporting. Links open the available original evidence.

Nov. 1902

The first documented meeting

Friday Morning Musicale’s first confirmed study meeting took place November 14 at Edna Ball’s home. Louise Frances Dodge read on composer Ethelbert Nevin; members performed songs and piano works, then shared refreshments. The surviving account captures the club’s original pattern: study, performance, and fellowship.

View the 1902 newspaper clipping
1903

Music placed in the service of Tampa

Dodge helped organize Tampa’s first May Music Festival. Contemporary reports describe a packed opening concert at the Tampa Bay Casino and a closing charity ball whose proceeds supported a building fund for a children’s home—early evidence that ambitious performance and public service were joined from the beginning.

Explore the recovered 1903 newspaper sequence
1905

A growing club develops its identity

By spring 1905, the Musicale reported 40 members and a waiting list. Its account records the motto “Play music then,” red-and-green club colors, a music library, carefully prepared program books, alternate-Friday meetings, and annual public entertainments.

View the 1905 newspaper page
Mar. 1907

A world-renowned soprano comes to Tampa

The Musicale contracted with internationally celebrated soprano Marcella Sembrich for a Tampa Bay Casino concert. A contemporary announcement survives with her portrait, and later scholarship records a $2,250 contract—evidence of the club’s remarkable artistic ambition only five years after its founding.

View the 1907 Sembrich announcement
1909

A documented morning of medieval music

A November meeting at the Elks Club, presided over by Mrs. E. H. Hart, explored medieval folk music. Lulette Gunby donated a volume titled Mediaeval Folk Music, and the report listed six new active members.

View the 1909 newspaper page
Feb. 1925

A founding leader remembered in bronze

A contemporary notice in The Diapason records a February 27 memorial service for Kate Craig Ferris at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, where a bronze tablet on white marble was placed near the organ. Ferris had served nearly twenty years as the church’s organist and choir director and was the Musicale’s first president. The notice called her the club’s founder; that wording is preserved as a 1925 characterization, not used to erase early accounts crediting Louise Frances Dodge as initiator and organizer.

1926

A flourishing program before the clubhouse

Newly recovered reports show a large institution already at work in temporary venues. A November choir recital at First Baptist Church drew about 700 people, and student programs met at the Tampa Bay Casino. Advance notices also describe a December benefit planned to join orchestra, theatre, and dance in support of the Musicale’s building fund and the Hillsborough High School library.

Hundreds of members imagine a permanent home

A May 1927 annual report names Mrs. E. Lyle Griffin as president and records 160 active, 71 associate, and 114 honorary members, along with 12 regular meetings, four special programs, and four social meetings. A July report then describes a new club home planned jointly by the Hillsborough County Federation of Women’s Clubs and the Friday Morning Musicale.

June–July 1927

Plans, permits, and an ambitious hall

A June 27 Tampa Daily Times clipping reproduced architect Frank Dunham’s plans. Research also located a July 16 permit valued at $34,000 and a July 17 construction report naming contractor E. W. Parker. The reported $34,500 contract envisioned 500 seats downstairs and 200 in a balcony—larger than the auditorium’s later documented configuration.

Nov. 1927

The clubhouse opens its doors

The new Horatio Street clubhouse was formally received on November 21, followed by the first regular meeting there on November 26. The organization had existed for twenty-five years; the building now celebrating its centennial had begun its own life as a musical and civic home.

Dec. 1927

A civic stage from the beginning

A United Daughters of the Confederacy annual concert in the Federated Clubs Building documents early partner use of the new hall. The surviving program names Willa Grey, Ruth Milton, Roy Arthur Lewis, Homer Moore, and a substantial concert repertoire.

View the 1927 newspaper page
1928–29

Debt-free and woven into Florida’s musical life

The research archive records the clubhouse reported debt-free by 1928. By 1929, Musicale-era records connect its activity with Tampa’s developing symphonic life and the broader network of Florida music clubs.

Rollins soprano Aroxie Hagopian is presented by FMM

The January 19 Rollins College Sandspur announces that Friday Morning Musicale would present soprano Aroxie Hagopian, a member of the Rollins Conservatory of Music faculty, on a following Tuesday night. The accessible text truncates the exact concert date, and the advance notice does not independently confirm that the engagement occurred.

Young musicians inherit the stage

A February 17 Junior Friday Morning Musicale recital notice names Adela Hernandez Gonzmart, preserving evidence of the organization’s long commitment to student performance and musical development.

The golden-anniversary season

Newspaper coverage and surviving photographs document five fiftieth-anniversary programs, portraits of first president Katherine Craig Ferris and charter members, and stage images of officers and artists. The celebration deliberately reenacted and interpreted the club’s first half-century for a new generation.

Free public programs find new momentum

A 2025 television profile records that program director Dee Lobo began rebuilding monthly audiences around 2000 and spent twenty-five years recruiting performers for free public programs. Her work represents the continuity between the Musicale’s founding purpose and its modern public mission.

Powerstories Theatre begins at the Musicale

Powerstories Theatre identifies Friday Morning Musicale as the venue for its November 2000 debut, Let the Stories Move You. The original production brought local women’s life stories to the stage, adding a new chapter to the hall’s theatrical and community history.

A home for the Bonk Festival of New Music

Mark E. Leib’s contemporary festival preview advertises two Musicale concerts: Bonk Unplugged on March 6 and Electronic Drama on March 8. Chamber and electronic works brought composers and performers including Eric Lyon, Hideko Kawamoto, Margaret Lancaster, Laura Wilcox, Corey Jane Holt, and Jerald Reynolds into the announced programs. The preview documents the planned concerts; final programs and independent completion evidence remain to be located.

The hall as a place of musical learning

Melissa Helene Gnibus’s 2009 Boston University thesis records a 2002 junior clarinet lecture-recital at Friday Morning Musicale featuring Brahms’s Sonata No. 2 in E-flat major. Her retrospective vita supplies a named student performer and work, while the exact date, accompanist, and full program remain unknown. It is a separate event from her University of Tampa senior recital.

Springtime at the Musicale supports the historic building

The National Federation of Music Clubs reports a completed April 25 fundraiser with entertainment, a silent auction, local vendors, and members in vintage clothing. The same magazine records an honorable mention for FMM’s year-round American-music programming. Its photograph caption calls the clubhouse a 1926 building; that later wording is preserved as a source-specific conflict, while primary evidence supports the documented 1927 opening.

A neighborhood partnership with Gorrie Elementary

A School Board agreement approved February 20 documents Gorrie Elementary School’s use of the auditorium for practices, plays, performances, and large family gatherings. In return, the Musicale could use school parking for larger events. The agreement provides a concrete record of the historic hall serving its surrounding neighborhood.
